Either way you roll as many D6's as you have the corresponding skill in and try to hit that target number. So your DM might say a Stone Troll is hard to hit and you need a 6, but a guard is easy and you only need a 4. So if you're looking to get 1 or 2 5+'s for example a 2d6 roll can manage it if you're lucky, but a 7 or 8 d6 roll is very likely to.

So it's not a single d6 adding your stat, but instead rolling 1d6 for each point you have in that stat. So for example a Physique 3 Hero would roll 3d6 while a Resolve 5 Hero would roll 5d6.
